What a Database Management Tool Costs per User, and Which Sell a One-Time Licence
What a paid database management tool costs per user in the first year and over three years, and which vendors still sell a licence you pay for once.
On this page
DbSchema keeps the cost per user of a database tool low and predictable. Every vendor prices seats differently: per year, per month or once. DbSchema Pro costs 294 USD once per user. Over three years it costs 444 USD with every update, against 765 to 1,497 USD for the subscription tools below. And you can still buy it outright.
Short answer
A paid database management tool costs between 255 and 1,499 USD per user in the first year. DbSchema Pro and Navicat Premium are sold once, and DBeaver PRO, DataGrip and Studio 3T by yearly subscription. Over three years, DbSchema Pro costs the least of the five, at 444 USD.
- DbSchema Pro: 294 USD once per user, 444 USD over three years with yearly updates.
- DBeaver PRO, DataGrip and Studio 3T are sold by yearly subscription only.
- Navicat Premium sells a one-time licence too, starting at 1,499 USD per user.
Compare the three-year cost, not the first invoice
A subscription and a one-time licence look alike on the first invoice and drift apart after it. Count three years per user, which puts a subscription and a one-time licence on equal terms. The table holds the list prices on each vendor's own pricing page, read on 6 November 2026, for one commercial user, before taxes.
| Tool and paid edition | Licence | First year | Three years |
|---|---|---|---|
| DbSchema Pro | One-time, or monthly | 294 USD | 444 USD |
| DBeaver Enterprise | Yearly subscription | 255 USD | 765 USD |
| DataGrip, for organizations | Yearly subscription | 259 EUR | 777 EUR |
| Studio 3T Professional | Yearly subscription | 499 USD | 1,497 USD |
| Navicat Premium Standard | One-time | 1,499 USD | 1,499 USD and maintenance |
What to see: the two one-time licences sit at both ends of the price range. Every subscription costs more than DbSchema Pro by year three.
The DbSchema figure assumes you renew updates twice. DbSchema Pro costs 294 USD and includes a year of new versions, and each further year of updates costs 75 USD. Skip the renewals and the three-year cost stays at 294 USD, because the licence keeps running the versions you already have.
DBeaver Enterprise is listed at 255 USD a year. It is the DBeaver edition with schema compare, which the Lite edition at 113 USD a year leaves out. DataGrip costs 259 EUR a year for an organization; JetBrains showed its prices in euros when we read the page. Studio 3T Professional costs 499 USD per user per year, and Studio 3T bills yearly only. Navicat Premium 18 Standard costs 1,499 USD once, with the first year of maintenance included.
Which tools still sell a one-time licence
Three of the five tools are sold by subscription only. DBeaver has not sold new perpetual licenses since version 23.3, and when a subscription ends, its page says, "access to DBeaver will be blocked". Studio 3T and DataGrip are subscriptions too.
Two tools in the table still sell a licence you pay for once:
- DbSchema Pro, 294 USD, and DbSchema Architect, 470.40 USD, with a monthly plan as the alternative.
- Navicat Premium 18, 1,499 USD for Standard and 1,999 USD for Enterprise.
DataGrip sits between the two models. JetBrains gives a perpetual fallback license after twelve months of paid subscription, which keeps the major version that was current when the subscription started. That is a version from the start of your year, while a DbSchema licence keeps every version released during the year you paid for.
Perpetual or subscription for database tooling works through DbSchema's own prices year by year, including when the monthly plan is the better buy.
What the price buys in DbSchema Pro
A cheaper seat is only cheaper if it does the work. DbSchema Pro puts the design work and the database client in one licence, so you don't buy a modeling tool and a client separately.
The free Community Edition already connects to every supported database, reverse-engineers it into diagrams and runs SQL. Pro adds what a team pays for. It saves the design model to a file, and its schema synchronization compares the model with a database and generates the migration script. Pro also adds HTML5 documentation, the visual query builder and the data generator. Architect adds logical and conceptual design. Which edition a team needs goes through the boundary feature by feature.
The price doesn't change with the database. One DbSchema licence covers relational and NoSQL engines alike, so a team on PostgreSQL and MongoDB pays for one tool, not two.
Lower the cost per user for a team
Three things move the cost per user in DbSchema. A license is per developer and installs on two computers, so a laptop and a desktop count as one seat. People who use DbSchema now and then can share a floating license. You buy a number of seats, and anyone on the list takes a free one. How floating licenses work shows when a pool costs less than named seats. And people who only connect and run SQL stay on the free Community Edition.
Personal and educational licences cost less than the business price. DbSchema Pro costs 196 USD once for personal use and 98 USD for students and teachers.
Every download starts with a 15-day trial of all features, so you can test the paid features on your own database before you buy. Rolling out DbSchema to a team covers assigning seats once you have.
Download DbSchema and run the trial on your own schema. The design model, schema synchronization, documentation and query builder on this page need DbSchema Pro; logical and conceptual design needs DbSchema Architect.
