About the DBF, FoxPro and xBase JDBC driver

A JDBC driver is a Java .jar library that lets applications connect to DBF, FoxPro and xBase. DbSchema uses JDBC to reverse engineer schemas, run SQL, and generate documentation. Driver files are usually published by the database vendor or an open-source project.

The DBF, FoxPro and xBase JDBC driver

DBF files (dBASE format) are a legacy tabular data format originally used by dBASE, Clipper, and FoxPro databases. They remain in use in legacy applications, government data exchange, GIS shapefiles, and geographic information systems that output DBF attribute tables.

Download DBF / FoxPro JDBC Driver

The driver archive is a zip file. Extract it and load the .jar files using DbSchema's Driver Manager.

Opening DBF Files

The DBF driver has no server to configure. There is no host, no port, no user account and no firewall rule — the JDBC URL points at a folder on disk, and DbSchema opens it directly. Two things still matter: the folder must be reachable from the computer running DbSchema, and it should sit on a local disk. File locking over network shares and NFS is unreliable, and an embedded database opened over one can be corrupted.
  1. Point at the folder, not at a single file. dBase, FoxPro and Clipper data sets are a directory of .dbf files, one per table. The driver treats the folder as the database and each file in it as a table.
  2. Keep the companion files together. Memo fields live in a separate .dbt or .fpt file, and indexes in .cdx or .ndx. Copying only the .dbf files out of an archive loses the memo contents.
  3. Set the character set. These files predate Unicode, so the charset parameter is usually needed — a DOS code page such as cp850 or cp852 for Western and Central European data. Without it, accented characters come through wrong.

DbSchema and DBF Files

DbSchema connects to DBF files using the JDBC driver and renders the flat file structure as SQL tables in the schema diagram, enabling SQL queries and CSV export from legacy dBASE data. This is especially useful for migrating legacy FoxPro or dBASE databases to a modern RDBMS.
