About the SAP Hana JDBC driver

A JDBC driver is a Java .jar library that lets applications connect to SAP Hana. DbSchema uses JDBC to reverse engineer schemas, run SQL, and generate documentation. Driver files are usually published by the database vendor or an open-source project.

SAP HANA is an in-memory relational database and application platform designed for high-speed analytics and transactional workloads. It is the foundation for SAP S/4HANA ERP and is used by enterprises for real-time business intelligence and OLAP over live transactional data.

The driver archive is a zip file. Extract it and load the .jar files using DbSchema's Driver Manager.

Finding the SAP HANA SQL Port

HANA has no single default port. The number is derived from the two-digit instance number and from which database inside the system you want, so the value DbSchema prefills is a starting guess that usually needs changing.

1. Work out the port from the instance number. Ports follow the pattern 3<instance><offset>. The system database answers on 3xx13. A single-container system, and the default tenant of a multitenant one, answers on 3xx15. Further tenants are assigned blocks starting at 3xx40, then 3xx43, then 3xx46. For instance number 00 that makes 30013 for the system database and 30015 for the first tenant.
2. Connect to a tenant, not to the system database. SYSTEMDB holds the system's own catalog. Application tables live in a tenant, so a connection to the system database shows a schema list that looks wrong. Where you are unsure of a tenant's port, query SYS_DATABASES.M_SERVICES from the system database to list them.
3. Or name the database instead of the port. The Specific DB entry in the Connection Mode combo adds databaseName= to the URL, which lets you connect through the system database's port and let HANA route you to the right tenant.
4. Open port 30015 in the server's firewall. The database listens on port 30015 unless it was installed with a different one. A host firewall on the server blocks incoming connections on that port until a rule allows them. The firewall guide has the commands for Windows, ufw, firewalld and iptables.
5. Connect from DbSchema. In the Connection Dialog choose Remote computer or custom port, fill in the server host and the port, then press Test Connection to check that the server answers before you connect.
