Filemaker JDBC Driver

This article will explain what are JDBC drivers, how to download the Filemaker JDBC driver and how to connect to Filemaker using DbSchema Free Database Designer.

What are JDBC Drivers?

JDBC drivers are Java library files with the extension .jar used by all Java applications to connect to the database. Usually, they are provided by the same company which implemented the Filemaker software. DbSchema Tool already includes an Filemaker driver, which is automatically downloaded when you connect to Filemaker.

What is the JDBC URL?

Each JDBC driver is using a specific URL. The URL is a string (text) with a specific format, containing information about the host where the database is running, the port, username, database name, etc. The format is specific to each driver. Any wrong character in the URL may make the database connectivity fail, therefore we recommend installing DbSchema and try to get connected. Then you can find the right URL directly in the DbSchema connection dialog.

Driver Information

  • Required File(s): fmjdbc.jar
  • Java Driver Class: com.filemaker.jdbc.Driver
  • URL: jdbc:filemaker://{HOST}:2399/{DB}
  • Website: Filemaker

The driver files are compressed in a zip file.

Please write to us for any question or issues with the driver.

Connect to Filemaker

To get started with Filemaker, you can register for a trial on There download and install the Filemaker Pro. After starting the application, you can choose for a starter solution. Go for the 'Tasks' solution first.

To make the database available for outside connections you should:

  • Set a connection for the 'admin' user. For this go in the File menu Manage / Security
    Configure Filemaker security
    Configure Filemaker
  • Enable JDBC Sharing:
    Enable Filemaker Sharing

Filemaker Known Issues

We couldn't find a way to reverse engineer foreign keys from Filemaker. Neither the driver DatabaseMetaData.getImportedKeys() or getExportedKeys() nor any system table, function or view does not list them. If you find a way to list them please let us know. It is also useful for us if you write to Filemaker support about this, maybe after few issues they will consider implementing a way to list them.

Connect to Filemaker using DbSchema Free Edition

Installing DbSchema Free edition will help to test the database connectivity and the JDBC driver URL.

Free Download DbSchema

When the download finished please follow this steps:

  1. 1 Select an Alias for your database connection. This will be the name of this specific connection to the database.
  2. 2 Select 'Filemaker' from the list of DBMS (Database Management Systems).
  3. 3 The driver for your database will be automatically downloaded for you in the folder
    • C:\Users\YourUser\.DbSchema\drivers\Filemaker (Windows) or
    • /Users/YourUser/.DbSchema/drivers/Filemaker (Linux and MacOS).
Each database can have multiple connection and authentication methods. Switch to a different method from the dropdown menu.
Choose database and alias

There are two tabs you can use to connect. 'Compose URL' will ask for the host, port, username, etc., and will create the JDBC URL for you.

The 'Edit URL' will let you directly enter the JDBC URL.

You can use the first tab to connect, and then see the created URL in the second tab.

Connectivity Troubleshooting

If you get problems connecting to the database, please remember :
  • Press the ping button in the connection dialog to make sure the host and port are reachable.
  • Enable Remote connections as they are not always enabled by default. This may require configuration changes.
  • Windows Firewall may block the communication. You may need to reconfigure or disable it.
  • Check the driver version is compatible with the database software. It may be that DbSchema provided a JDBC driver is not the latest version. Please inform us in this case.
Further connectivity tips can be found on the Filemaker Connectivity Tips page.
